From Navy careers to Quilt Shop Owners to Farmers!
In 1988, Steve's parents purchased a small tobacco farm of 80 acres in Phenix, VA. Ten acres were cleared for farming, 70 acres were hardwood and pines. It had a small pond, numerous spring fed streams, 2 tobacco barns, 7 various out buildings, and the "rights" to grow 2,000 lbs of tobacco. They quickly sold the tobacco rights and used the money to fix up a 1910 era, 1408 sq ft farm house.
Steve and I were married 1991, bringing together 4 Children, Jessica, Gus, Andrea and Casey. We were both stationed in the Norfolk area in the Navy. We would take many family trips down to the farm enjoying the slow country life. Steve was a Deep Sea Diver and I was a Navy Nurse. After 24 years for Steve and 20 years for me, we retired in a joint ceremony in 2001.
Steve always wanted to travel the world on a 45' Morgan sailboat but I didn't do well in rough seas so we changed plans.
Steve's dad deeded 40 acres of the farm land to us and 40 acres to his brother. We bought his brother out and now we were living life in the country. Steve and his 72 year old dad, Dave built a beautiful 3000 sq ft home from scratch, which you see in the picture for us to live in. What a wonderful retirement. In 10 months we were moved in.
Now it was time to decide what to do on this farm. I loved sewing and quilting, so Steve built me a quilt shop on the property. We opened the doors with our pastor blessing our family and business in December of 2010. Since then we have grown through adding on then to moving to a 7000 sq foot building in Rustburg VA. Threads Run Thru It still thrives today.
Our next adventure began in 2022 when we decided to turn this "Farm" into a real Farm. You ask why not just retire and enjoy the outcome of our hard work. If you have ever spent time with me you know why! We now have 10 grand children and I wanted to make sure the farm supported its self and maybe one or more of our grandchildren would like to run the farm someday. I love farm animals and wanted to stay home and raise some cool creatures. Our animals began with chickens, then bunnies, 2 adorable goats, and our beautiful herd of miniature Highland cattle. I'm so excited for the future. Come along and join us on our adventures.
